Over the past few months, we have slowly explored the different spaces we occupy in our daily lives. From physical rooms to digital environments, there are twelve spheres of daily life with the most influence on our well-being. Some spheres—like the bedroom, the bathroom, or the kitchen—are concrete places we physically enter into, whilst others—like the phone, the wardrobe, or the wallet—are more abstract and experiential. Yet they all represent a facet of modern life.
The spheres are archetypal. We all know what a bedroom is, how a workplace functions, and how a phone works. Yet one’s bedroom, workplace, and phone are uniquely their own. While we may not have every single sphere represented in our personal lives, each one represents universal areas we all occupy at one point or another.
The twelve spheres are:
Many of us have all twelve spheres individually represented, while others have a more blended representation of them. Neither is good nor bad, simply a data point to consider.
When we live in a studio apartment there isn’t technically a bedroom, separate from the kitchen or the living room, so these spheres all morph together. Yet within that room, there is a dedicated area for sleeping, a spot for cooking, and a place for relaxing. Technically the bedroom, kitchen, and living room are still individually represented spheres, albeit on a more condensed scale.
For a full-time student, the workplace is represented by academia. For the retiree or stay-at-home parent, the workplace can be thought of as where the bulk of one’s waking hours are spent, wherever that may be.
For an urban dweller perhaps the car is represented by public transportation or the shoes they walk in. Whether we drive around in a car or not, we are all moving through the world in some way, shape, or form. At its crux, the car represents how we are moving through the world, regardless of whether or not there is a physical car present.
The phone represents our digital lives, so it speaks not only to our cell phones, but also to our computers, tablets, and smartwatches.
The twelve spheres are a loose framework to play with, not a rigid system that must be adhered to. They are malleable and the way that they show up is specific to an individual’s unique experience.
